Trends in Ceramics at CERSAIE 2013 (Bologna, Italy) | Houzz
Larger, thinner, and lighter. Textured, patterned, and combined. The overwhelming feeling from this year’s edition of CERSAIE Bologna was that the ceramics industry is successfully launching this versatile material into place as a sustainable, cost-effective, technologically superior, and aesthetically pliable substitute for many other traditional building materials.
I spent about 6 hours this past Tuesday winding my way through the sea of ceramics at this International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings. It is one of the largest of its kind, and most certainly the most important in Italy, with over 900 exhibitors from 33 countries. Over half of the stands are dedicated to ceramic tiles of all shapes, sizes, and technologies, while the remaining exhibitors are in the bathroom business.
CERSAIE is traditionally the place where the Italian ceramic industry leaders show their stuff, often unveiling new products for the first time. I unfortunately only had one day to run around like crazy, seeing as much as I could. So you’ll forgive me for not walking you through these photos here, but instead I’ll leave you with links to my Houzz.com articles on the subject and a slideshow of the goods:
Tile Goes High Tech at Italy’s Big Expo
Cutting-edge methods are creating tile looks from handmade to avant-garde, as seen as CERSAIE 2013
More than 900 companies from 33 countries around the world descend on Bologna, Italy, every year to showcase their ceramics and bathroom products at the CERSAIE, the International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings.
From what I could see at the 2013 event, the Italian ceramic industry is forging ahead with its plans to push ceramic tiles as the sustainable material of the future. Meanwhile, a large selection of Spanish companies seem to be giving Italy a run for its money, presenting stylish patterns that use high-tech methods to create a handmade look.
Here is an overview of some of the trends and highlights that I noticed during my day at the 2013 show, which ran from September 23 to 27. Keep in mind, I didn’t get to see everything. Covering 176,000 square meters of exhibition space was a difficult task, even in my trusty boots.

10 Bathroom Standouts From Italy’s Big Expo
Sleek finishes, high-tech fixtures and more. Discover some of CERSAIE 2013’s best and brightest bathroom offerings
I spent some time recently at Italy’s biggest international expo for ceramics and bathroom furnishings, the annualCERSAIE, in Bologna. Multinational companies use it as an opportunity to show off their newest products. Often working in collaboration with well-known designers, they create exhibition stands that serve as mini tributes to ingenuity in bathroom technology, water efficiency and creativity.
Many of the products that caught my eye I suspect will influence future trends in bathroom design, as many CERSAIE products have done in the past. I should note that I have a personal interest in anything that makes a bathroom easier to clean. You’ll probably notice that I tend to like products that liberate floor space and avoid seams or joints where water can settle.
