Italy’s GSE (Gestore Servizi Energetici) has released their 2011 Statistical Report: Solar Photovoltaics (click for PDF download), stating that Italy installed more new photovoltaic plants than any other country in the world last year, and now ranks second only to Germany in total installed capacity.
Thanks to the feed-in tariff (Conto Energia), Italian plants in 2011 had a combined capacity of over 9,300 MW, which was almost three times more than the PV capacity in Italy at the end of 2010. The fifth version of this law is currently under review.
“GSE is the state-owned company which promotes and supports renewable energy sources (RES) in Italy. In particular, GSE fosters sustainable development by providing support for renewable electricity (RES-E) generation and by taking actions to build awareness of environmentally-efficient energy uses.” (GSE website)
